Tenth President John Tyler is born in Charles City County, Virginia. Born into an aristocratic Virginia family, Tyler served as Governor of Virginia while also representing the commonwealth in the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. Elected vice president in 1840, he ascended to the presidency a month after the inauguration as President William Henry Harrison passed away in office.
