Led by Leonard Calvert, the first English settlers land at Saint Clement's Island, establishing the Province of Maryland. Sailing aboard the Ark and Dove, the Catholic passengers held the first mass in the colonies, led by Father Andrew White. Calvert, the younger brother of Cecil Calvert, had been appointed proprietary governor of Maryland by his brother, who was given land by King Charles I to establish a Catholic colony in North America.
