General Robert E. Lee is born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father, Colonel "Light Horse" Harry Lee, served in the Continental Army with George Washington. Lee, a career officer in the United States Army, resigned his commission in 1861 to join the Confederacy, where he eventually led the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 to 1865.
