    United Nations and American soldiers land at Incheon, driving back the North Korean People's Army. The amphibious landing on Korea's western coast surprised the Communist forces and liberated South Korea, but did drag American forces into a ideological civil war on the Korean Peninsula.

    Four members of the United Klans of America bomb the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four African-American girls.

    27th President William Howard Taft is born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Taft would become the only man to serve as both President and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
