    American and Japanese naval forces clash in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, fought during the six month-long Guadalcanal Campaign in the Solomon Islands. The U.S. Navy sought to protect Henderson Field, a captured Japanese airfield on Guadalcanal, from a Japanese amphibious assault.
