  • Battle of Fort Washington

    British and Hessian forces surround and capture Fort Washington, the last remaining American garrison on Manhattan Island. Outnumbered over two-to-one, Colonel Robert Magaw surrendered the fort to Hessian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Knyphausen, forcing General George Washington to retreat across New Jersey into Pennsylvania.

    Oklahoma enters the Union as the 46th state. The state was created by merging the Oklahoma Territory with existing Indian Territory.
