The Whittemore House, built 1716, was another "witness house" that still stands along the route of the British retreat in Lexington. In 1775 it was home to three generations of the Whittemore family, including Jacob and Esther Whittemore and Jacob's daughter Sarah, who had fallen ill after childbirth on April 19. Her husband Moses, though a member of the local Lexington militia, decided to stay at home to protect his family rather than join his company in the fight. The home is now part of the Minute Man National Historic Park.
