A stone marker on the Lexington Green commemorates the line where militia members gathered to fend off the British on April 19, 1775. A message on the stone, attributed to Captain John Parker, reads:
"Stand your ground
Don't fire unless fired upon
But if they mean to have a war
let it begin here."
