  • Battle of Buffington Island

    Union cavalry and militia defeat Confederate General John Hunt Morgan at the Battle of Buffington Island, fought in Ohio and West Virginia along the banks of the Ohio River. The Union force captured over 700 of Morgan's men, who had been raiding cities in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. One week after the battle, Morgan and his remaining cavalrymen surrendered. 

  • Seneca Falls Convention begins

    At the Wesleyan Chapel in Seneca Falls, New York, the first-ever women's right conference in the United States convenes with almost 200 women in attendance. Organized by abolitionists Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the convention's final resolution established “that it is the duty of the women of this country to secure to themselves their sacred right to the elective franchise.”
