  • Neil Armstrong walks on the Moon

    The NASA Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle sets down in the Sea of Tranquility, the first spacecraft to reach the moon. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first two men to walk on the moon as the third astronaut, Michael Collins, remained in the command module.

  • Battle of Peachtree Creek

    Newly promoted Confederate General John B. Hood attacks General William Sherman's army at the Battle of Peachtree Creek, just north of Atlanta. Hood, known for his aggressive strategy, had replaced Joseph E. Johnston in a desperate attempt to save Atlanta, but Sherman repulsed several Confederate attacks before taking control of the city.
