  • Yom Kippur War begins

    Syria and Egypt attack Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. The conflict would last three weeks, threatening détente between the United States and the Soviet Union, before American Secretary of State Henry Kissinger helped negotiate a ceasefire.

    The Naval War College is founded on the grounds of Naval Station Newport in Newport, Rhode Island.

    George Westinghouse, Jr. is born in Central Bridge, New York. Westinghouse, an engineer and inventor, would invent the air brake for rail cars and his company would successfully develop an alternating current system that would provide electricity across the country.
